According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Pepper Potts actress Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t know Samuel L. Jackson was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe despite the Nick Fury appearing in several of the same films as her, such as Iron Man 2.During a Q&A with Empire for the home video release of Avengers: Endgame, Feige revealed that the filming of Tony Stark’s funeral at the lake house “was shot in October 2017, the day we shot the 10th anniversary photo.”
Feige continued, “That’s why we did that photo then, because we had everybody there. And it was astounding, having all those actors there, and it’s very solemn in the movie, because they’re all great actors, it’s very effective. On the day it was just insane.”
That also meant that Tony’s funeral was shot before Infinity War, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp were released so some of the cast were stunned to find out certain actors had joined the MCU. Feige recalled “Tom Holland [was] coming up to me, saying, ‘Is that Michelle Pfeiffer? What is happening?'”
Then Feige offered this kicker: “Gwyneth Paltrow [was] asking why Sam Jackson was there, and the other actors [were] jumping in saying, ‘What are you talking about? He’s Nick Fury! You’ve been in movies with him.’ But it was really something special.'”
This isn’t the first time Paltrow has been completely unaware of happenings in the MCU. It was recently revealed that Paltrow didn’t know she was in Spider-Man:Homecoming. And according to Bucky Barnes actor Sebastian Stan, Paltrow forgot that she’d met Stan several times, something he posted about on Instagram.
